DIVERSION SPECIALIST
Housing and Homelessness Department

Divert families referred by the Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) from homelessness to housing stability and assist them in achieving economic self-sufficiency. Screen and assess families seeking emergency housing assistance. Provide information and referrals regarding ABCD programs and other community resources inaccessible to families and/or to avoid shelter placement. Collaborate with other staff to develop housing leads and landlord contacts through outreach activities. Coordinate rental assistance strategies and applications. Cultivate knowledge of area resources and work with partnering agencies to ensure and implement strategies of a comprehensive and collaborative model. Ensure all clients are tracked, and services and measurable outcomes are identified and documented in a timely and thorough manner. Participate in staff and team activities and meetings. Foster and maintain a positive working relationship with DHCD staff. Perform other related duties as required.

Demonstrated ability and dedication to advocate effectively on behalf of clients to help them access benefits and services. Must be able to work and set appropriate boundaries with clients who may have mental health, substance abuse, and/or domestic violence issues. Knowledge of homelessness issues and/or housing programs helpful. Ability to work in a chaotic environment and with a team of direct service staff required. Strong ability to keep work organized. Must have a valid driver’s license and pass a CORI check. Bilingual skills a plus. Minimum of a high school diploma or GED required. Bachelor’s degree preferred. Must have at least three to five years of case management or related social services experience. Must be able to work sensitively and effectively with individuals of diverse educational, socio-economic, and cultural backgrounds.
